Haryana crush Odisha in Cooch Behar Trophy match

Despite impressive batting in the second innings, host Odisha suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Haryana on the fourth and last day of their Cooch Behar Trophy (U-19) Plate Group A match at Nimpur ground here today.

Batting first, Haryana rode on a century each by Bharat Dureja and Guntash Singh to put up a formidable total of 414. Medium-pacer Suryakant Pradhan was the pick of Odisha bowlers, bagging six wickets for 80 runs. In reply, Odisha were bowled out for 229 with opposition pace bowler Poonish Mehta bagging five wickets. Ashok Barik top scored for the home team with a half-century.

Forced to follow on after conceding a 185-run first innings lead, Odisha batted much better than the first innings by compiling a total of 365. Three batsmen _ Pallabendu Mishra, Ranjit Singh and Sujit Lenka _ performed well but only to miss respective centuries narrowly. Poonish Mehta took four wickets to finish with a match-haul of nine wickets for 157 runs.

Needing 181 for victory, the visitors rode on a half-century each by Guntash Singh and S Sharma to overhaul the target in 43.2 overs, losing five wickets in the process. The win fetched Haryana five points, while Odisha drew blank.
